Why do you choose to wear the 1980 Miracle on Ice jersey?
Gas prices were high and supply was limited. Tensions in the Middle East escalated when American citizens were held hostage in Iran. People all over the world were being denied basic civil rights.
Amidst all of this turmoil, 20 unknown hockey players form all over the U.S. traveled to Lake Placid, New York to play a game on a little piece of ice against an unstoppable Russian National Team. That night, the world witnessed a “Miracle On Ice” as the young U.S. team defeated the Russians and instilled pride in a disheartened America. The team went on to win the gold medal in a game against Finland, but that night they were champions.
Today, nearly 30 years later, we are facing one of the worst recessions in history and are at war in the Middle East. As political powers are shifting in the U.S., citizens in this country are struggling to gain civil rights and equality. This year, 16 women hockey players from the United States will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark to play their game on a sheet of ice. This time, not to play AGAINST a rival nation, but to play WITH the World in a celebration of Human Rights and Equality. These women are playing hockey to show their support and to represent the United States LGBT community and bringing its’ issues to the World Outgames Conference.
